The Opening Gala Reception and Preview Sale is a pottery collector’s paradise with an extensive selection of hand-made functional pottery with over 5,000 pots to choose from. Each of the 50 Georgia potters will have on display and sale an average of 100 pots in the Rocket Hall Sales Gallery.

Two significant pottery exhibitions in the OCAF Art Center building will also be open. The Main Gallery will have on display an exhibit of 150 pots; two pots by each of the fifty potters and one pot from each of their private collections. In the Members Gallery there will be a display of pottery by Jose Luis Yamunaque and Kate Tremel.

Georgia Mudcats will perform at the Gala Reception & Preview Sale

Meet and mingle with this year’s participating potters while enjoying a wide assortment of tasty finger foods and liquid refreshments under the tents adjacent to the Memorial Sculpture Garden. Performing for your pleasure will be The Georgia Mudcats, This well known band will bring you a program of Appalachian string-band music, flatland country blues, gospel music and traditional songs from all over the South. The Opening Gala Reception and Preview Sale is open to the public. Ample free parking is available.

Main Gallery

This annual exhibit, featuring the best works of each of the 50 Georgia potters and a very special piece selected from their private collections, is considered by many as the finest display of contemporary pottery in the state.

OCAF Members Gallery

A special exhibition will showcase the works of master potter Jose Luis Yamunaque and his former student Kate Tremel. These extraordinary pots were made using a pre-Columbian paddle and anvil technique that is used in Yamunaque’s native northern Peru.

Gallery Talks by Michael Pitts
Sunday, September 4 and 11, Starting at 1 p.m.
Main Gallery, OCAF Art Center
Free Admission and open to the general public

Expand your pottery proficiency in a gallery talk through both exhibition galleries. Michael Pitts, a well known Georgia potter will lead these talks covering pottery styles, clays, glazes, firing techniques and general information about pieces in the exhibit.

Kate Tremel Jose Luis Yamunaque’Pottery Workshop
Peruvian Hand and Feet-Building: a workshop with Jose Luis Yamunaque and Kate Tremel.
August 27 & 28, 10 am-5pm
School Street Studio, OCAF Art Center
Fee: $135.00 (OCAF registration form must accompany fee, download here)

In this workshop master potter Jose Luis Yamunaque and his former student Kate Tremel will lead students through the many stages of the pre-Columbian paddle and anvil technique used in Yamunaque’s native northern Peru. Yamunaque is renowned for his research of pre-Colombian engobes and has developed a unique ways of working with multiple layers colored terra sigillata. Instruction will cover the preparation and application of colored terra sigillatas.

Pottery Demonstrations by Participating Potters
Every Saturday, 1-4 pm, free – Rocket Hall Courtyard

These experienced potters will demonstrate wheel throwing and hand building techniques and be available to answer questions.
